India Directs Smartphone Makers to Preinstall Sanchar Saathi App
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has instructed smartphone manufacturers in India to preinstall its state-developed cybersecurity application, Sanchar Saathi, on all new devices sold in the country. According to officials, the app must be non-removable, and brands must also roll out a software update to include it on devices already in use.
This directive, part of a broader national cybersecurity initiative, is expected to affect major manufacturers such as Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo. Industry experts indicate that companies are likely to raise concerns due to potential compliance and privacy implications, but the government has given them three months to implement the requirement.
Part of a Larger Cybersecurity Push
A senior government official stated that the move aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen digital security and curb cyber fraud. This includes a recent directive mandating SIM binding for communication platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram, ensuring these apps function only with the SIM used during initial registration.
About the Sanchar Saathi App
Launched in January, Sanchar Saathi has already crossed 50 lakh downloads. The government reported that, as of September, the platform enabled the blocking of over 37.28 lakh lost or stolen devices and helped trace 22.76 lakh phones across India.
Key functionalities include:
1. Tracking and Blocking Lost or Stolen Phones
Using a unique 15-digit IMEI number, the app lets users block devices nationwide, preventing misuse and helping law enforcement trace stolen phones.
2. Preventing Counterfeit Devices in the Market
By identifying and authenticating IMEI information, the app supports authorities in stopping fraudulent or cloned devices from circulating.
3. Reporting Fraudulent Communications
Users can report suspicious calls, SMS messages and fraudulent activity on messaging platforms directly through the app.
Impact on Consumers and the Smartphone Industry
If implemented, the government mandate means:
- All new smartphones will ship with Sanchar Saathi preinstalled
- Users will not be able to uninstall the app
- Existing devices will receive the app via software updates
- Smartphone makers must comply within three months
Industry reactions are awaited, as none of the major companies or the DoT responded to queries before publication.
